I¡¯d like to deal with this question from three different perspectives: government, scientists and the general public.
Environmental problems caused by man-made factors are serious in China due to its massive population and large-scale construction. Only the government can control these problems. Therefore the central government should enact relevant rules and regulations to reward those who protect nature and punish severely those who harm the environment.
As to scientists, I think they must do a great deal of research to find effective ways to prevent or stop the pace of the environmental deterioration. Second, they should work out ways to make better or full use of the natural resources so that there will be no wastes expelled into the air. Thirdly, and the most essential, can they find some substitutes for the natural resources which are depleted? If so, mankind will never be threatened by an energy crisis.
To protect the environment, we, the general public, should also not avoid shouldering the responsibilities. From childhood, we were told that China was a country with vast lands and abundant natural resources, so most of us took it for granted that it was impossible for China to rank high among countries which are suffering from a weak ecosystem and so we waste water, waste gas, waste electricity and waste everything we can waste. Now we have to accept the realities and cope with the problems. We are both the creators and victims of environmental disasters, but we are also the solution to these disasters. If everyone increases consciousness of environmental protection, we can improve the environment.
Government, scientists, and the general public, cherish our nation¡¯s substances and spare no effort in protecting the environment. Who says we can¡¯t save the Earth?
