As far as social development is concerned, at least three aspects should be included, industry, agriculture, and science and technology. I am going to talk about them respectively.

The industrial development does bring benefits to us. For example, it creates better living conditions for the human beings and enables us to live more conveniently and happily. We have TV sets, air-conditioners, and refrigerators because of the development. But just as a coin has two sides, the industrial development brings some negative effects. In manufacturing daily necessities or luxurious equipment or appliances for us, factories pollute the environment with waste gas or water and they do great harm to our health as well. On the other hand, the excessive development makes the living space for both animals and human beings become less. Some animals even become extinct because they lack their natural habitats. Another negative effect is that development is exhausting our energy resources very rapidly. On day when everything in the world is used up, where will the human beings go and live?

Agriculture is important in our life and its development is the guarantee of the existence of human beings on the earth. A good harvest will provide sufficient food for the people. Therefore, we must develop agriculture. Now farmers use modern and scientific methods in cultivating the land and raising the crops, but the development also brings pollution to the environment. For instance, farmers use pesticides or weed killers to kill pests and to get rid of the unwanted weeds so as to improve productivity. The chemicals they use have negative effects and some are very poisonous. They may be left on plants or vegetables and do harm to human beings and animals.

The development of science and technology has brought dramatic changes to the people’s life. The inventions of television, space aircrafts and rockets have opened a new world for the mankind. It is rarely hard for us to imagine how different life is just because the emergence of computer and internet. But we also suffer from the modern development. A good case in point is nuclear power. While nuclear power stations bring many benefits for us, a slight error there may cause terrible damage. I believe everyone remembers the Chemobyl nuclear accident in the former Soviet Union 20 years ago, causing high casualty and extensive radiation to people near that locality.
