Topic: Examination
Reference for Question Four

It is a common practice that our students are judged by scores rather than by competence in school just as people are judged by their diplomas in the job market. From primary school to college, students, teachers, parents --- all are struggling for high scores. This is because the current educational system is not aimed at students¡¯ quality, but only at developing their ability to perform well on the test. As a result, many students, even those with high scores, often do poorly when it comes to the practical application of the knowledge and theories they have learned. We have ignored the development of practical competence.
It is essential that we train ourselves to be competent in coping with various practical problems. We have to apply our knowledge to practice and gain valuable experience as much as possible in order to adapt ourselves to the future world --- society. We must lay emphasis on the quality training rather than the high score. In conclusion, high scores cannot replace competence.
Therefore, China is now challenging examination-oriented education by advocating quality-oriented education. The alternative will focus on the students¡¯ ability and quality as a whole. And the exam results will no longer play a key role in evaluating the academic achievements that a student gains in school.
