Topic: Stress
Reference for Question Three

In such a highly competitive society, people are under constant pressure and have to face up with different kinds of it. They keep complaining that time is pressing, that the examination is tough, and that the job is stressful. It¡¯s true that too intense a pressure is harmful to an individual¡¯s physical and mental health, but at the same time we should keep in mind that pressure is inevitable and stimulates us to greater efforts. For example, the pressure of enrolling oneself in a satisfactory university keeps a student working hard, and the fear of losing one¡¯s job keeps an employee seeking continual self-development. In a certain sense we may say that pressure makes the world go round. So it¡¯s hard to decide whether pressure is good or evil. What counts is to learn how to relieve us of the burden of work and study. So remember pressure is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing as it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of pressure is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
